It is rare that any sort of turmoil ever infiltrates the Spurs’ organization, so coach Gregg Popovich had no desire to involve himself in another team’s drama.
When asked Sunday about the ongoing conflict between Knicks owner James Dolan and beloved alumnus Charles Oakley, Popovich said it was “not his problem.”
On the court, Popovich found his team had plenty of its own problems to worry about.
The Spurs fell to the Knicks, 94-90, at Madison Square Garden.
They are now 2-2 on the rodeo road trip and 41-14 overall.
The Spurs created two quality looks trailing by four with about 30 seconds remaining, but neither Kawhi Leonard nor Danny Green could convert their jumpers.
“We wanted it bad, man,” said Anthony, who scored 10 of his team-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. “We came out, we fought, we competed – something we haven’t been doing the last couple of games.
Leonard finished with a game-high 36 points on 13 of 26, his 18th 30-point game of the season. He added nine rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The four other members of Popovich’s starting lineup did not fare nearly as well.
Green, LaMarcus Aldridge, Danny Green and Tony Parker combined for 24 points on 23.5 percent shooting.
The Spurs matched their season high with 21 offensive rebounds, which they converted in 15 second-chance points. They also scored 21 points off of 20 Knicks turnovers.
Poor shooting made it almost impossible to properly capitalize on all of their opponent’s miscues.
The Spurs shot a season-low 36.3 percent against the Knicks, their second sub-40 percent shooting performance during this current road trip.
