Katherine Heigl’s latest comeback vehicle is CBS’s “Doubt,” a medium-light legal procedural with a serialized element: her lawyer Sadie Ellis’ defense of and simmering romance with her client, a wealthy do-gooder pediatric surgeon (Steven Pasquale) who is accused in the long-ago murder of his high school girlfriend. The cast includes Elliott Gould as Isaiah Roth, a legendary lefty lawyer who runs the law firm, and the very likable Dule Hill and Laverne Cox as fellow lawyers (Cox is the first transgender actor playing a transgender main character on broadcast television). It’s all pretty standard stuff, with some of the quirkiness feeling rather forced, but one thing to look out for: recurring guest star Judith Light as Sadie’s mother, a former radical imprisoned for her involvement in the death of a man years earlier. What else is new this week:
Audience Network puckishly returns the polyamory comedy “You Me Her” for its second season on Valentine’s Day. It stars Greg Poehler and Rachel Blanchard as a couple whose marriage has lost its fizz and Priscilla Faia as the psychology grad student/call girl whom they invite into their relationship. In its second season they deal with the logistics of being a throuple (both in bed and out) and its impact on their circle of friends when they out themselves. It’s “that universal question of ‘What happens when the romantic comedy fades to black?’,” says creator John Scott Shepherd. “What happens after that? You know, real life sets in.” Audience Network is available to DirectTv subscribers, but you can catch the first season on Netflix. (Tuesday, 8:30 p.m.)
In the epic tradition of “Whitney,” “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” and “The Brittany Murphy Story” comes “Britney Ever After,” Lifetime’s very special biopic of Britney Spears starring Aussie actress Natasha Bassett. The 2-hour TV movie purports to track the 35-year-old singer’s highs and lows, but the trailer lingers on Spears’ mid-2000s meltdown, from the paparazzi confrontations to the rehab stints and includes a recreation of her infamous head-shaving. Would we have it any other way? (Saturday, 8 p.m)
