GLENMONT — Members of the Elsmere and Selkirk fire departments, along with other volunteers, joined forces Saturday to move a shipment of Valentine’s cards, candy, notes from school children and personal care items to U.S. Troops serving in overseas locations, including Afghanistan, Kuwait, Romania, Korea, Iraq, Japan, Mali.

The shipment of 80 boxes was collected at Panera on Route 9W and shipped from the U.S. Post Office on Feura Bush Road. It included notes from school children in the Sharon Springs school district, a birthday cake for a Marine serving in Kuwait and a box sent to honor the memory of Robert “Gus” Gusberti, a World War II Purple Heart recipient, who helped with previous mailings and recently died.

The effort was organized by Christmas Cards for Our Troops, a volunteer organization that sends care packages to troops year round, with a focus on Christmastime. The next mailing will be in mid-June and the final mailing of the year will be on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017.
