The third-annual gun buyback yielded a record 262 firearms and 47 pellet guns, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Only three of those guns were reported stolen, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
In exchange for a $50 Wal-Mart gift card, Central Floridians anonymously turned in their guns on Thursday at the Orange Blossom Trail Development Board parking lot at 2719 S. Orange Blossom Trail.
“As a community, we have a responsibility to be responsible,” Bishop Kelvin Cobaris said at a Tuesday press conference.
Compared to the 2016 buyback, this year’s event brought in 113 more firearms and 13 more pellet guns, sheriff’s spokeswoman Jane Watrel said. Law enforcement collected 225 firearms and 33 pellet guns at the first buyback in 2015.
In 2016, a total of 914 guns were reported stolen to the Sheriff’s Office, with 479 of them taken during house burglaries and 336 taken during car burglaries, according to data collected by the Sheriff’s Office.
“Once these guns are on the street, there’s absolutely no way to control them,” Orange County Undersheriff Reinaldo Rivero said at a Tuesday press conference.
