NBC series “Chicago Med” delivered yet another emotional, action-packed hour in which Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) treated an 8-year-old cancer patient that wanted to give up fighting his debilitating illness. Next week, the doctors make difficult decisions when a blizzard hits Chicago and the number of patients that need urgent treatment rises rapidly.
In Season 2, episode 14, suitably titled “Cold Front,” a traumatic multi-vehicle incident during a blizzard leads to several people being wheeled in to the hospital. This results in the doctors and nurses bracing themselves for an influx of patients. However, it isn’t long after the accident occurs that the staff finds themselves overworked and extremely exhausted.
Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and Dr. Latham (Ato Essandoh) handle cases based on the severity of the patients’ wounds or illness. The patient with the most severe wounds will be treated first and then others will be attended to. Implementing this system, known as triage in medical circles, means that some hard decisions need to be made.
Things get worse when supplies become limited as a result of treating several patients. The hospital’s administrator, Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), will have to find a solution to deal with their dwindling medical supplies.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) treats a severely burned patient who has one final request.
Even Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) will have his hands full during the blizzard. He treats an agitated patient who makes his presence known in the waiting room.
Given than Chicago is dealing with a blizzard, “Chicago Fire” firefighters Casey (Jesse Spencer), Severide (Taylor Kinney), Boden (Eamonn Walker) and Herrmann (David Eigenberg) will be dropping by in the upcoming “Chicago Med” episode. Paramedic Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) will also be seen.
“Chicago Med” Season 2, episode 14 premieres Thursday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
