Wayward political reasoning, Feb. 4

Martin Reg Cohn’s condemnation of the Ontario government’s refusal to allow the imposing of tolls on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway is overblown. Ontario governments have done a great deal to relieve traffic congestion and pollution in Toronto by the development of Metrolinx, which is working towards the provision of a seamless, plentiful public system of transport for the GTA.

Tolling the Gardiner and DVP is the easiest political option for Mayor Tory and his council by making mainly commuters pay to finance solutions for the city’s problems. If Tory and his council are serious about relieving traffic congestion and pollution in the city, let them put their political capital on the line by developing a firm plan for a citywide, comprehensive public transit system that will be financed by an inner-city congestion charge and by property taxes more in line with municipalities in the GTA.

When Torontonians are mainly bearing the cost involved in benefiting their city, tolling roadways vital to commuters might get a better response from both the government of Ontario and those of us living in the suburbs.
