Heavy smoke poured out of an electrical vault in Van Nuys today, prompting authorities to close the street in both directions and evacuate two businesses as a precaution.

Los Angeles firefighters responded to the 6600 block of Van Nuys Boulevard to investigate the smoking electrical vault, said department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

Officials closed Van Nuys Boulevard in both directions between Vanowen and Kittridge streets, evacuated two small businesses and secured the area around the vault, Stewart said. Firefighters were waiting for an LADWP crew to arrive.

Firefighters on scene reported the smoke coming out of the electrical vault decreasing from heavy to residual.

No injuries were reported.
