TRENTON — Heather Watson, a lifelong city resident, was sworn in as the newest member of the school board Wednesday.

Watson, who turns 46 next week, comes from a politically connected family. Her father is Bill Watson, a former chief of staff to former Mayor Douglas Palmer who now serves on the parking authority’s board, and her aunt is U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-12th Dist.).

Watson works as a government relations specialist at Horizon NJ Health, but her background includes 20 years in various supervising positions to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines, train new employees and coordinate companywide regulatory programs.

“Ms. Watson’s experience in government and public policy is an asset to the school board,” Mayor Eric Jackson said. “As a graduate of Trenton Central High School, she is looking forward to representing the critical interests of our students, parents, teachers and administrators.”

Watson is currently a student at St. Peter’s University, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in professional studies and social sciences.

Her appointment comes after the January resignations of Guillermo Gomez and president Jason Redd. The mayor still has two vacancies to fill on the nine-member board.
