The University of Colorado has a new partnership with car-sharing company Zipcar that campus officials say will give students, faculty and staff a new, sustainable way of getting around.
The agreement, announced last week, will bring 10 Zipcar vehicles to campus. The cars can be reserved by the hour or by the day.
The university already partners with car-sharing company eGo CarShare, which has 10 vehicles on campus.
“CU Boulder is happy to double the number of car-share vehicles on campus, provide greater access to car-sharing and offer another transportation option for those who bus, bike or walk to campus, but require a vehicle during the day,” said David Cook, senior transportation demand manager, in a news release.
The partnership with Zipcar gives CU students and employees a discounted annual membership fee of $15 for the first year and $25 every year after that. A regularly priced membership is $70.
Zipcar will also let CU drivers who are 18 and up drive its vehicles, a lower age requirement than the company offers the public. All other drivers must be 21 to use the car service.
The hourly fee for using a Zipcar vehicle is $7.50.
The partnership also allows CU students and employees to make one-way trips. Campus officials believe this will allow students to drive a Zipcar vehicle to Denver International Airport, then hop on a flight without worrying about returning the vehicle.
CU drivers can also make one-way trips to a variety of locations in Denver and to the CU Anschutz Medical Campus.
The university already offers a number of sustainable transportation options and incentives, including carpooling, campus buses, bike sharing programs, RTD passes and more. The campus wants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2020.
