Sports writer and commentator Kate Fagan will give the University of Colorado’s commencement address this spring, the university announced this week.
Fagan, who played for CU’s women’s basketball team from 1999 to 2004, will speak at Folsom Field on May 12 during the annual all-school spring commencement ceremony.
She is a columnist and feature writer for espnW, ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine. Fagan, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., also appears regularly as a commentator on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” and was featured on ESPN2’s “First Take” and “His & Hers.”
Prior to joining ESPN, Fagan spent three seasons covering the Philadelphia 76ers for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
In 2014, Fagan penned a memoir called “The Reappearing Act: Coming Out as Gay on a College Basketball Team Led by Born-Again Christians.” In the book, Fagan described her experiences as a gay student-athlete trying to fit in with her teammates, many of whom were involved in the religious student group Fellowship for Christian Athletes.
Fagan said the writing process was cathartic and helped her make sense of her time in Boulder.
“Back then, if I was going to tell somebody (that I was gay), it would be on my knees with my head bowed, almost asking for forgiveness … ” she told the Daily Camera in a 2014 interview. “There was a lot of shame in it. And now, I don’t have that same internal homophobia. I’m in a place where I’m proud of who I am.”
