While debates about the existence of global warming rage on, Jeffrey Bennett offers scientific proof that it’s real, he says, adding that he’s confident the proof is indisputable. He also offers solutions people on both sides of the argument can agree on.
Following the success of his Relativity lecture tour in 2015, Bennett will be presenting his newest talk, “Global Warming Demystfied,” in Fiske Planetarium on the University of Colorado campus at 7 p.m. on Friday, a repeat of a presentation he gave on Feb. 2. He’ll project images within the planetarium dome to accompany his talk.
Bennett, who earned his Ph.D. in astrophysics from CU, is an award-winning astrophysicist and author with more than 30 years of experience in climate science education.
The talk, which he premiered in Fiske Planetarium two years ago, is the inspiration for his recent book “A Global Warming Primer: Answering Your Questions About the Science, the Consequences, and the Solutions.”
Bennett believes his talk is valuable to everyone, from green activists to skeptics. It provides the science behind climate change at a level understandable to fifth graders.
“My talk is clearer for people who don’t feel they understand it right now. In a rising sea of global awareness, we can cause the wave to break by educating and discussing it as much as possible,” said Bennett.
The evidence of global warming can even be seen right here in Colorado — the pine beetle infestation and the wildfires that have been spreading across the state show extreme events are becoming more and more common, according to Bennett. That’s why fostering global warming awareness is so important, now more than ever, he said.
While Bennett considers the book a definitive answer to all of the biggest climate change questions he’s received over his 30 years as an educator, the talk focuses on the most common and important ones he’s heard.
“A lot of people have questions about global warming,” Bennett said. “Some wonder if it’s real, some think it’s real and don’t know why, some don’t know what to do about it — this talk is meant to address everybody, to explain the science behind it and why we feel confident it’s real.”
