CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Netherlands, Japan, and UN Environment plan to establish a “Global Center of Excellence on Climate Adaptation” to help countries adapt to climate change.

On Monday, UN Environment, the “voice for environment in the United Nations system,” announced its goal of helping countries, institutions and businesses to adapt to a warming climate, which is increasing the frequency of natural disasters and causing economic disruptions, according to the press release.

The new global center will “bring together international partners, including leading knowledge institutes, businesses, NGOSs [non-government organizations], local and national governments, international organizations, and financial institutions.”

The new center within the United Nations will basically be a tool in implementing the Paris Agreement, and further exploring strategies to adapt to climate change.

The Paris Agreement, ratified by 129 parties of the 197 parties in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, aims to bring together all nations for a common cause to “undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects.” The technical goal is to keep global warming below a threshold of 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

President Donald Trump has already vowed to back the United States out of the Paris Agreement within his first 100 days in office.

The Dutch minister for UN Environment is pushing the new center because “Failure of dealing adequately with climate change will increase a multitude of risks such as natural disasters, social and economic disruptions, and increasing political tensions. Many people are looking for good practices and guidance with regard to climate change adaptation. I am convinced the Global Center of Excellence on Climate Adaptation can help [address] these changes.”
