BAYONNE — A rash of car burglaries continued last week as six more vehicle break-ins were reported in the northern section of the city, according to police.
Less than a week after four car burglaries and one stolen vehicle were reported, Bayonne police received a litany of new reports over a two-day span. However, police say the break-ins don’t appear to be connected.
In the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 3, a 17-year-old Jersey City resident was arrested and charged with burglary and hindering apprehension for attempting to steal items from a Nissan Maxima parked on Avenue B between 55th and 56th streets, police said.
The owner of the vehicle called police and reported that the juvenile and two other people were breaking into the car. When police arrived on scene, the two other people fled, but the teenager was apprehended. He provided police with a false name, and was later released to a guardian, police said.
Authorities then received reports of four car burglaries — all within the city’s third ward — during a three-and-a-half hour span Friday. The first was reported just after noon on West 55th Street, while reports of car break-ins followed on East 47th, East 45th and East 44th streets.
A day earlier, a car burglary was reported to police in the area of West 43rd Street at approximately 10:45 a.m.
Bayonne police didn’t specify what items were taken from any of the car thefts. Bayonne Police Capt. Robert Geisler said the break-ins are not being investigated as related incidents.
This most recent string of burglaries capped six-day stretch that saw 11 incidents of vehicle-related crimes.
Four car burglaries and one stolen vehicle were reported to police between Saturday, Jan. 28 and Monday, Jan. 30.
