The Black Maria Film Festival is back for its 36th season, opening Saturday night, Feb. 11, in Hoboken at the Hoboken Historical Museum, 1301 Hudson St.
Festival director Jane Steuerwald will introduce the selection of award-winning films to be screened, and filmmakers will be present for a Q & A. The program begins at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and tickets are $10 at the door.
The Black Maria Film Festival celebrates moving-image arts. It was named for Thomas Edison’s West Orange film studio, dubbed the “Black Maria” due to its resemblance to the type of black-box police paddy wagon known as a “black maria,” according to a news release for the event.
The Festival is an annual juried competition traveling to audiences across the US and abroad. It features short works in all genres, and supports the work of international independent filmmakers.
Parking is available at the Littleman Parking-Independence Garage (Shipyard Lane, at 12th St.) which offers 3 hours of free parking with Museum validation. Call 201-656-2240 for details.
The festival continues throughout the month, with screenings on Feb. 17, at 8 p.m., at Ramapo College’s Berrie Center for the Performing and Visual Arts, 505 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah; on Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. at the Madison Arts and Cultural Society in the Chase Room at the Madison Public Library in Madison; on Feb 19, at 8 p.m., at the AMC Dine-In Theater, Essex Green 9, 495 Prospect Ave., West Orange; and Feb. 25 at the Performing Arts Center at Sussex County Community College, 1 College Hill Road, Newton, NJ, at 7 p.m.
Other Black Maria Film Festival screenings are scheduled throughout 2017 at many venues throughout the state, including Centenary University, Caldwell Flowerland, Monmouth University, the LBI Foundation of the Arts and Sciences and more.
