PARMA, Ohio – Before City Council headed into budget meetings Feb. 6, they adopted several resolutions honoring high athletes and a well-respected community activist.

The first resolution honored the Padua Franciscan Lady Bruins volleyball on winning the 2016 Division II State Championship. The school’s Lady Bruins volleyball team has won four state titles in the past eight years.

Council also adopted a resolution honoring Padua’s Fall Yard Clean-up Project, which helped 40 housebound seniors with their yards last fall. Marco’s Pizza on Broadview Road donated pizzas for the nearly 110 students who participated in the project.

Kathryn Mabin was honored as “Citizen of the Month” for her work on the Parma Area Fine Arts Council. She has also worked on the Friends of the Parma Theater, Proud of Parma, Treat N Greet and the Rudy’s Strudel mural project. Mabin is the creator and chairwoman of the “Flamingo Fever” project as well.

Council also honored Basista Furniture as the “Business of the Month.” The State Road business landmark is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The second generation business donated three beds this past Christmas to a Cleveland family whose nine-year-old son is battling bone cancer.

On first reading was a series of resolutions regarding the sanitary sewer improvements on Ridge Road from Stearns Farm to the North Royalton line.

The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 21.
