SANTA MONICA — A suspect was shot to death today by a California Highway Patrol officer, authorities said.

It happened about 12:20 a.m. in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, according to Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

“The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead,” Alexander said. “No officers were injured during the incident.”

The suspect was a man armed with a knife, NBC4 is reporting.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives were investigating the shooting, she said. What prompted the CHP officer to open fire was not immediately reported.
