Neighbors shouted “You murderer!” and “Shame on you!” when cops hauled the alleged killer of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano out of an NYPD station house Sunday afternoon — as her parents expressed relief and vowed to see justice done in court.
Chanel Lewis, 20, was charged with second-degree murder in Vetrano’s Aug. 2 slaying in Spring Creek Park, officials said.
Lewis ignored questions from reporters but stared wide-eyed at news cameras and didn’t try to hide his face on the way out of the 107th Precinct headquarters in Flushing, Queens.
Lewis’s wrists were handcuffed behind his back, his ankles were shackled with a chain, and he appeared to be wearing a bullet-proof vest under a blue-and-gray striped sweater. His black sneakers had no laces in them.
At virtually the same time, Vetrano’s parents spoke outside their Howard Beach home, with father Phil Vetrano — a retired FDNY firefighter who found his daughter’s battered body while searching with cops — saying: “It’s a good day. We can move on now.”
Mom Cathie Vetrano said of Lewis: “We know who he is. He’s a savage, and we’re glad he’s off the streets so he could never kill anyone else’s daughter.”
Phil also said that going to court for his hearings was a “no-brainer,” with Cathie adding: “The demon must get his justice, and we will see to it!”
“Oh, yeah!” her husband added.
