A thief made off with $1,800 in iTunes gift cards by creating confusion over a refund for a computer protection program sold to the victim, according to Pennsylvania State Police in Lehigh County.

The crime allegedly occurred Jan. 26 in Upper Milford Township when the suspect, whom police did not identify, sold the victim a firewall program for $468.

The suspect later contacted the victim to ask for remote access to the victim’s computer and bank account to provide a refund for the program, police said in a news release.

Once granted, the scammer allegedly transferred an extra $2,000 from the victim’s savings account to his checking account, making it look like an overpayment on the refund.

At the thief’s request, the victim agreed to purchase 36 Apple iTunes gift cards totaling $1,800 to make up for what he thought was an overpayment, police said.
