Marco Silveira was a one-man wrecking crew as the host Petaluma boys soccer team handed first-place Elsie Allen only its second loss in Sonoma County League play, winning 3-0 on Friday night.
Silveira, the senior captain, put the Trojans on the board in the first half on a through ball sent by Ethan Waters. A streaking Silveira beat his defender and put the ball in the far corner.
After Alex Sousa made it 2-0 in the second half on a pass from Silveira, Waters again gave Silveira an assist when Silveira chipped the charging goalkeeper to get his second goal of the night.
“We have lost a couple of games, but this gives us the confidence to get in there and fight,” Silveira said.
The upset win moves Petaluma to 6-4 in league and drops Elsie Allen to 8-2.
However, the Lobos remain in first place in the league standings with one week to play and are battling to win only the fourth SCL athletic title in the school’s history.
Montgomery 6, Cardinal Newman 1
After a tough loss against Windsor on Wednesday night, the host Montgomery boys soccer team bounced back nicely on Friday night by registering a 6-1 win against Cardinal Newman to keep the Vikings and Jaguars in a virtual tie for first place in the North Bay League with one week to play.
“We were coming off a loss so tonight it was good to get things going again,” Montgomery coach Jon Schwan said. “It is good to get momentum back.”
Montgomery (15-4-3, 10-2) is up by a half game on Windsor, but only has two league games to play while Windsor has three games. Depending on what happens in the final week, the league title may come down to a tiebreaker protocol to decide the regular-season NBL champion.
The Vikings started the scoring barrage just 44 seconds into the game as Guillermo Gonzalez hit a low liner from 15 yards out for a goal. Gonzalez scored a second goal later in the game.
Montgomery had 15 shots (8 on goal) to 5 shots (1 on goal) for the Cardinals (4-15, 0-11), who are still searching for their first league victory.
Windsor 3, Casa Grande 1
The visiting Jaguars (12-3-2, 9-1-1) dominated the midfield in the win, keeping them in the battle for first place with Montgomery.
The Gauchos (8-8-5, 5-4-3) are in the middle of the NBL pack.
Windsor took the lead in the third minute after converting on a corner kick and maintained a 1-0 halftime lead.
Trailing 2-0, Casa Grande got on the board in the 61st minute as Patrick Mantaoni booted a crossing pass into the net from 10 yards out.
Windsor responded with a late insurance goal in the second half for a 3-1 final.
“Windsor was the better team. Windsor owned the midfield. Their forwards worked really hard,” Casa Grande coach Chris Rodd said. “They take their scoring chances very well and every opportunity they get is on frame.”
Windsor had an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Sonoma Valley 6, Piner 3
The Dragons moved one game closer to SCL leader Elsie Allen by defeating the visiting Prospectors. Sonoma Valley (7-6-2, 7-3) is in second place one game behind the Lobos with two games to play.
“Tonight we played the way we are supposed to,” Dragons coach Pedro Moreno said. “We were more disciplined and cohesive.”
