Marchand vs. Marner

Opponents always know when Bruins winger Brad Marchand is on the ice. The NHL’s second star for January (11 goals, nine assists) and Boston’s leading scorer (54 points in 54 games) recently avoided league discipline for tripping up Anton Stralman of the Lightning, days after drawing the maximum $10,000 fine for slew-footing Niklas Kronwall of the Wings. The Leafs will hope to match his intensity and production with the likes of Mitch Marner, the league’s rookie of the month for January (15 points in 13 games) and one of the club’s few bright spots in post-break losses to the Stars and Blues, scoring in both games.

NEED TO KNOW

Top-line Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron is questionable after taking a slapshot off the leg in Wednesday’s 5-3 loss to the Capitals. . . . Boston goalie Tuukka Rask, drafted 21st overall by the Leafs in 2005, is expected to get the start. . . . The Leafs trail the Bruins by three points for third place in the Atlantic Division, but Toronto still has five games in hand.
