President Donald J. Trump’s executive order on immigration sparked strong reactions across the country, leading to a continuous string of peaceful and violent protests and counter protests. And this weekend is no exception.
The Orlando Police Department said they are aware of the rallies and have officers on duty for security purposes, Orlando Police spokeswoman Sgt. Wanda Miglio said.
“Our number one top priority is the safety of our community,” Miglio said.
On Saturday, a “Peaceful Rally for Equality” will be hosted at Lake Eola Park on from 6 to 10 p.m. Central Florida residents will march in solidarity with Muslim immigrants in an ongoing effort to fight discrimination, violence and bigotry, according to the event’s Facebook page.
In addition, the Students Organize for Syria chapter at the University of Central Florida will host a “March for Humanity” on Feb. 8 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event will begin at Memory Mall, across from the CFE Arena.
“This is a march for our refugee and immigrant brothers and sisters who have been denied entry into this wonderful nation,” said SOS President Amirah Mathin in a Facebook post. “Together, we will peacefully march across campus in solidarity with the countless refugees and immigrants who have been barred from entering and re-entering the United States.”
A group of community members are also planning to attend the Orange County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday at 201 S. Rosalind Ave. to push elected officials to fight the refugee ban and the construction of a wall between Mexico and the U.S.
Not related to the latest politics, a group called Black Lives Matter Justice for Pine Hills scheduled a march from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Lake Eola Park.
