MADRID, 10 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The rate of absenteeism due to Temporary Disability (IT), that is, due to common illness or non-work accident, occupational disease or work accident, stood at 5.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022, one tenth above the of the previous quarter and two tenths more than in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to a study published this Monday by the Adecco study service.
IT is the main reason for work absenteeism, but not the only one. For example, hours not worked due to maternity and adoption, paid leave and labor disputes are also included in absenteeism.
Adding up all these factors, the absenteeism rate in Spain reached 6.7% in the fourth quarter of 2022, a figure practically similar to that of the previous quarter and one tenth higher than that of the fourth quarter of 2021.
Adecco considers absenteeism to be the set of hours not worked for occasional reasons, which do not include losses due to temporary employment regulation (ERTE) files, nor for vacations and holidays.
At the same time, he warns that it is a mistake to equate absenteeism with unexcused absences, even if they are part of it, but not the most important one.
According to his calculations, the hours not worked due to work absenteeism during the fourth quarter of 2022 would be equivalent to 1,044,816 employees not having gone to their job in said period, a figure 5.9% higher than that of the previous quarter and 4.4% above that of the same quarter of 2021.
By autonomous community, Asturias has the highest absenteeism rate, 7.8%, followed by Aragon (7.4%), while the lowest rates are found in the Valencian Community (6.2%) and Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha, both with 6.3%.
By sectors, industry is the sector with the highest rate of work absenteeism, 7.1% in the fourth quarter of 2022, followed by the services sector (6.8%) and construction (5.2%).
If the data are analyzed by activity sections, social services activities without accommodation present the highest rate of absenteeism, with 10.6%. They are followed by health activities (10.5%) and assistance in residential establishments (10%).
In contrast, the divisions with the lowest level of absenteeism are film, video and television program activities, sound recording and music publishing (2.5%); real estate activities (3.4%) and telecommunications (3.5%).
Adecco’s report also contains data on another labor market indicator, workplace accidents.
At the end of the fourth quarter, the incidence rate (number of accidents at work per 100,000 inhabitants during a working day) stood at 225, which represents an increase of 1% year-on-year.
The incidence rate of ‘in itinere’ claims (those that occur on the way from home to work and vice versa) was 36, 5% more than the interannual rate.
Regarding the seriousness of the accidents during the working day, 99.2% are of a minor nature. Fatal accidents during work hours represented 0.1%, but have increased by 14% in the last year.
According to Adecco, the incidence of accidents due to Covid was 7 per 100,000 people in the fourth quarter of 2022, 47% less than in the third quarter but 15% more than in the last quarter of 2021.
The autonomies with the highest incidence rate of occupational accidents are Cantabria, Asturias and the Balearic Islands, the most affected workers are between 60 and 64 years old, and women have a higher incidence rate than men.
