MADRID, 27 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The socialist deputy and former director general of Turespaña, Héctor Gómez Hernández, will be the new Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, replacing Reyes Maroto, who is leaving his position to be the socialist candidate for Madrid Mayor’s Office in the next municipal elections in May .

This was announced this Monday in an institutional statement by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who has praised the “extraordinary” management carried out by Maroto at the head of the Ministry of Industry, as well as the profile and “experience” of his replacement, Héctor Gómez, former spokesperson for the Socialist Parliamentary Group and current president of the Constitutional Commission of the Congress of Deputies.

Born in November 1978 and graduated in Law, with a degree in Labor Sciences and a Diploma in Tourism, Gómez has developed his professional career in the private and public sectors.

A member of the Parliament of the Canary Islands between 2015 and 2018, he was the general director of Turespaña in 2018 and 2019, the year in which he was elected a member of Congress for the Tenerife constituency.

During his appearance, the Chief Executive praised the work that Maroto has carried out as Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism since his first government in 2018.

“Minister Maroto has been key to reindustrializing our economy, to boost trade and also to modernize one of the main economic sectors of our country that suffered so much during the pandemic, which is tourism. The pandemic was a colossal challenge for all of these sectors and the management of Minister Maroto has been essential for all of them to have already recovered pre-pandemic levels”, highlighted Pedro Sánchez.

The President of the Government has stressed that laws such as the Industry Law, the Statute of Electro-intensive Companies and various strategic projects such as the Perte VEC or the Perte del Naval are examples “of the extraordinary management” of Reyes Maroto.

“I want to thank you for your work and especially thank you for always being at the forefront in the worst moments, in the worst situations. All sectors recognize your talent, your ability to listen and your management skills”, said Sánchez de Maroto.

Of his substitute at the head of the Ministry, the socialist Héctor Gómez, has highlighted his “impeccable” career and his “unwavering” commitment to defending the general interest.

Sánchez has outlined that, after this appointment and that of José Manuel Miñones as the new Minister of Health, the Government faces the final stretch of the legislature, a period in which “it will continue to deepen the great objectives of the legislature”.

Among them, the president has cited the transformation of the production model thanks to European funds to modernize the large sectors of the Spanish economy, develop new ones for the future and create quality employment “throughout the territory”.
