ICANN and UASG mobilize the global Internet community to promote Universal Acceptance
LOS ANGELES, March 9, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG) invite the global Internet community to participate in the events of the Universal Acceptance (AU) Day which will take place on or around March 28, 2023. The objective of this conference is to promote a more inclusive Internet, compatible with a wide range of languages and scripts. About 50 events are scheduled to take place in more than 40 countries on the occasion of AU Day.
As the cornerstone of today’s global Internet, UA offers numerous benefits to both individual Internet users and the organizations that serve them. The current population of the Internet comprises approximately five billion users, and at least one billion more are expected to connect. Most of these potential new users live in countries where languages other than English are spoken and written. The implementation of the UA guarantees that all users take full advantage of the social and economic benefits offered by the Internet, thanks to the use of the domain name and email address that best suits their interests, commercial activity, culture, language and writing code.
The UA is the gateway to a more inclusive and multilingual Internet. In recent years, the Domain Name System (DNS) has grown considerably as a result of the introduction of new generic top-level domains (eg .photography, .technology). Internationalized domain names were also introduced (for example, एमईआईटीवाई.सरकार.भारत, 红螺寺. 网址, صحة.مصر, стопоронаballowус.ф) and high -level domains with country code (for example, .भारत)). Although DNS has evolved, the checks used by many software applications to validate domain names and email addresses are still outdated. In addition, not all online portals are prepared for the use or opening of a user account with an internationalized email address, which prevents a large number of users from browsing the Internet in the language and with the digital identity of your preference. Considered a technical compliance best practice, UA addresses these issues by ensuring that all valid domain names and email addresses, regardless of script, language, or character length, can be used equally. on all Internet-enabled devices, systems and applications.
“Universal Acceptance is a fundamental requirement for achieving a truly global and multilingual Internet,” said Sally Costerton, ICANN President and Interim CEO. “The inaugural celebration of AU Day will help achieve this goal by raising awareness about AU and providing the tools necessary to ensure that all Internet-enabled devices, systems and applications work with all domain names and valid email addresses This historic event provides an unprecedented opportunity for local, regional and global stakeholders to come together and celebrate AU’s progress, as well as help get the next billion users online “.
“Universal Acceptance is crucial for consumer choice and the digital inclusion of all users, which includes the language in which they express themselves both orally and in writing,” said Ajay Data, President of the UASG. “UA Day was instituted as a global event to raise awareness of Universal Acceptance. From now on, it will be celebrated annually on or around March 28. Stakeholders around the world greeted this initiative with enthusiasm and will participate in approximately 50 events that make up this inaugural edition. We are confident that AU Day will mark a decisive milestone in promoting Universal Acceptance.”
About UA Day Hosted by the UASG community group and ICANN, UA Day will consist of technical training and awareness sessions hosted by the UASG and ICANN, together with interested global organizations and partners. Through a mix of virtual, face-to-face and hybrid sessions, the AU Day seeks to engage and mobilize the leading technical and language communities, businesses, governments and DNS industry stakeholders to better understand the benefits of AU and how to prepare your systems for AU.
