Three new professionals join the team of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation Medical Institute in Spain, which will begin its first medical appointments this February. Specifically, the medical director, Pilar García, whose specialty is paediatrics, is now joined by Dr. Sergio Cornide as a family doctor, the nurse María Domínguez and the social worker María Pacheco.
The Foundation, the legacy of Dr. Lejeune, the geneticist who discovered trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), has the purpose of providing comprehensive and scientifically-based care for people with intellectual disabilities of genetic origin.”We have a team of professionals highly trained to be able to care for all people with intellectual disabilities of genetic origin, as they need Since our resources are limited, we are trying to carry out a scholarship program to access consultations and thus help as many people as possible better”, explains Pablo Siegrist, general director of the Foundation in Spain. “In this 2023, the incorporation of an internist, a geriatrician and a geneticist, a neuropsychological paramedical team and nutritionist, and specialists in cardiology, neurology, traumatology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, gynecology, radiology, psychiatry, dentistry, otolaryngology and sports medicine”, he adds. This Medical Institute is the first center specializing in genetic intellectual disabilities that aims to care for 4,000 patients a year. Located at Calle Esparteros, 11 in Madrid, it has more than 400 m2 divided into two floors. In addition to medical care, the center will have a biobank and a space for training and dissemination. The objective is that doctors, health personnel, families, caregivers and the patients themselves have a training space in which specialized professionals impart knowledge on important issues that affect them. Profiles of the incorporations Dr. Cornide is a doctor from the Complutense University of Madrid and master’s degree in neuroscience from the same University. After his residency at the Cristal Piñor hospital in Ourense and the Puerta de Hierro University hospital in Madrid, he has developed his professional career at the San Rafael Hospital, the University Clinic of Navarra, the San Francisco Pediatric Group and the HM Montepríncipe Hospital. She is a member of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics. For her part, María Domínguez has a degree in Nursing from the Autonomous University of Madrid, specializing in pediatric nursing. She has extensive experience in different disciplines such as neonatology, pediatric ICU, and pediatric surgery in centers such as Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid. She is currently studying an Expert Diploma in Bioethics from the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation. María Pacheco has a degree in Social Work and a specialist in social policies and marginalization from the Comillas Pontifical University. She has a master of arts in social work from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom. She has extensive experience in the field of social work in different prestigious entities in Spain, such as Cáritas, as well as in different hospitals.
