– From COP27 to G20: World youth urge world leaders to uphold multilateralism and empower youth
SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Ahead of the G20, students from 15 prestigious universities in nine countries called on world leaders to empower youth and uphold the principles of multilateralism to make the commitments of zero net carbon emissions take action.2
The call to action comes from the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC) Youth Ambassadors who released an open letter addressed to world leaders at the ‘Climate x’ event at COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. Held at the China Pavilion on November 9, Finance Day, the event brought together GAUC members with global climate leaders, including Xie Zhenhua, China’s special envoy on climate change; Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Associations of France; Inger Andersen, Executive Director, UNEP; Nick Stern, President of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, LSE; and Elizabeth Yee, executive vice president of the Rockefeller Foundation.
Xie Zhenhua, China’s Special Envoy on Climate Change, stressed the importance of young people contributing to the synergistic approach to the climate problem: “The cross section between solutions to climate change and other SDG goals is the key to the green revolution. of humanity, which is the spirit of ‘Climate X’. The time has come to encourage more young people to join this movement and come up with innovative solutions.”
During the event, GAUC Youth Ambassadors released a letter to world leaders on behalf of students across six continents, highlighting the need to harness the skills and drive of youth towards urgent climate action. Yenziwe Mbuyasa, Stellenbosch University GAUC Global Youth Ambassador, said: “Global youth have a vested interest in climate action to help the world and are ready to contribute their passion, knowledge, intellect and actions to protect our planet for a sustainable future”.
Developed by the next generation of climate leaders, the letter urges decision-makers to honor the principles of intergenerational equity and multilateralism, and to expand channels for youth to participate effectively in global climate governance.

The climate X event is part of GAUC’s Climate x 2022 Campaign, which includes a series of events at national, regional and global levels, such as a Climate x Youth Leadership Training Pilot Program, an Africa Regional Climate Forum, as well as the ‘Climate x’ Global Youth Summit on Net-zero Future, and Global Youth Climate Week 2022.
