The current labor market environment may be ideal for negotiating a salary increase, with a strong demand for workers and a high inflation rate, a good part of Canadians have never attempted to do so. In total, only 36% of them are comfortable doing so, according to a survey conducted by Indeed in March 2022.
As for women, 68% of them would rarely or never try to negotiate it, compared to 54% of men. The study identifies 45% of women who are very or extremely uncomfortable with the idea of negotiating their salary, compared to 26% of men.
The senior director of sales in Quebec at the Indeed job, recruitment and hiring platform, Stepan Arman, nevertheless believes that there are ways to carry out this negotiation.
The first step is to determine its value, taking into account its skills, training and certifications. But also to simply see how much other professionals earn in a similar position. A negotiation is also prepared by noting the outline of its talking points, but also by relying on figures and details on its own achievements, according to Stepan Arman. It is also necessary to get into the habit of conversing, to remain confident, calm, flexible… And to know how to say no when necessary.
