Re-elected eight months ago for a third term, the government of Justin Trudeau has a record number of promises, revealed Polimeter Trudeau 3.0.

These are 578 promises that the Polimeter team of the Center for the Analysis of Public Policies (CAPP) and the Leadership Chair in Digital Social Science Education (CLESSN) at Laval University has identified.

This number is much higher than that observed during the two previous campaigns, i.e. 353 in 2015 and 343 in 2019.

Since the start of its third mandate, the Liberal government has achieved all or part of nearly 16% of its 2021 election promises, 12% more than at the same time of its previous mandate.

“Thanks to the March 2022 agreement between the Liberal government and the NDP, but also because of the unpopularity of the government’s calling of the last election, this minority government could be more stable and durable than the previous one. This would increase the prospects of a better record than that of Trudeau 2.0, a minority government that lasted less than two years and broke 48% of its promises,” said Alexandre Fortier Chouinard, research assistant for the Polimètre and doctoral student in political science at the University of Toronto.

Note that this is the first time that we can follow the fulfillment of the promises of a minority government that benefits from an agreement with an opposition party. However, the global situation and the pandemic could push the government to review its priorities, believes Mr. Fortier Chouinard.
