To address global food insecurity, the Government of Canada has invested $100 million for the growth of agri-food SMEs in Africa.
It was the Minister for International Development, Harjit S. Sajjan, who made the announcement on Sunday. The latter also stressed the importance for Canada “to invest in green agribusinesses, especially those that are led by women or that benefit women on the African continent”.
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) took the opportunity to recall that agricultural SMEs produce between 70 and 90% of Africa’s food. They are therefore essential to ensure food security on the continent, in addition to creating jobs.
“The funding announced today is being provided through the Government of Canada’s International Assistance Innovation Program, which helps accelerate private sector development, which in turn contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals” , CIDA said in a statement.
