After winning the national slam contest last fall in Montreal, it is in Paris during an international contest this week that a Gatineau resident is now showcasing her slamming skills.

Louise Nathalie Boucher, by her pseudonym LouNat, represents Quebec at the Grand Poetry Slam 2022, World Cup category, in the City of Light.

In an interview, just before leaving for France a few days ago, she recalled her first contact with slam several years ago.

“What I felt then was visceral instinct, like an irresistible attraction. Subsequently, I then brought my texts to the following games, and thus began this idyll. Since then, I write and declaim for the pure pleasure of pushing my imagination to the limit, to deepen themes and simply to exchange with other poets in Old Gatineau.

Slam is poetry first written and then declaimed in front of people. It is competitive, with a form of claiming, protesting, denouncing injustices of all kinds.

LouNat told us that it was her sense of fun and her optimism that kept her afloat. “I did it not to win, but for the pleasure of sharing. And from an activity made for the pure pleasure of the thing, I slowly carved out a path. However, it must be considered that my career spans a period of 14 years! Indeed, since 2008, I have been sculpting words, through alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors, figures of speech, and I have deepened various themes, coating everything with a touch of theatricality.

With her perseverance and her recognized talent, LouNat will therefore find herself on the boards in Paris, Wednesday evening, to compete with others who, like her, have things to say!
