The researchers compared achievements of elementary school students and freshmen from private and public schools. In German, mamatics and English, private students are ahead of ir comrades from state schools for up to half a school year. This advantage, however, goes back mainly to family background of students and not to quality of school, educational researchers suspect. If one calculates social origin, “n lead of private almost completely melts toger,” says Petra Stanat, director of Educational Research Institute. Occasionally re are even advantages for state schools.
