Alan Ball is one of few elder statesmen in still quite young series genre. The creator of Six Feet Under and True Blood is now 60 years old, just like Greg, family far in his new HBO series here and now. Greg (Tim Robbins) suffers from his age, his country, which tramples his liberal ideals. In short, one could say that ball portrays in here and now idealistic America, while it sees decline of its values. The philosophy professor and bestselling author Greg and his wife Audrey (Holly Hunter) have adopted three children who are now adults. Duc (Raymond Lee) comes from Vietnam, Ashley (Jerrika Hinton) from Liberia and Ramon (Daniel Zovatto) from Colombia – “all countries where Americans have screwed up”, as Duc once noticed dry. Kristen (Sosie Bacon), youngest, bodily daughter, suffers from being boring white chicken of family and hopes for a little more variety in pedigree through a DNA test.

Diversity, social diversity or what many of m understand is anor major me of series, and it is noted in many places that it was written when Donald Trump had just been elected president of United States. At Kristen’s high school, some students want to start a “white” club. All or ethnic groups would have ir own club, so why not m too? Institutional racism continues, for example, when black Ashley accompanies her white sister Kristen to police station and both women are treated completely differently. Wher transsexual, headscarf-carrying Muslim teenager would necessarily have needed in series – well.

Especially since re is also a second strand of action that occupies a lot of space: Ramon, Colombian son, suffers from visions and seems to have a mysterious connection to a woman from past. The genre mix between classical family history, mystery and social critique goes on – at least in first four episodes that were to be seen in advance. The far, who closes his eyes to reality and son, who broadens his gaze to anor dimension. Both are escape impulses from reality in today’s America. (Carolin Stroebele)
