The British low-cost airline easyjet wants to significantly increase its market share in Germany and expects a doubling of number of passengers. Accordingly, 18 million passengers are to be transported in this fiscal year, said European boss Thomas Haagensen on launch of first fly from Berlin-Tegel Airport. 2017 were still a good eight million.

After takeover of parts of insolvent Air Berlin, easyjet will be offering 19 connections from Tegel – for first time within Germany. From Berlin, airline now wants to serve Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart and Munich up to eight times a day. EasyJet also wanted to appeal to business travelers with destinations such as Vienna, Zurich, Copenhagen and Stockholm, said Haagensen. Or flights are to go to Sicily or Mallorca, among or things.
The head of Tegel Airport, Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, suggested possible price reductions for tickets in this context. With easyjet, a very competitive airline is coming to Tegel, which is a “very good news” for customers, he said on ZDF. Thus, competition again prevails on inner German routes, said Lütke Daldrup.
“Number one in Berlin market”
EasyJet finance chief Andrew Findlay also spoke of an important step for capital. “We will be number one in Berlin market,” said Findlay. In addition, airline offers up to 1,000 employees of Air Berlin a new job.

EasyJet had taken over parts of insolvent airline Air Berlin for 40 million euros. The deal includes takeover of 25 aircraft as well as take-off and landing rights for Tegel Airport. This means that number of machines in Berlin has tripled, Haagensen said. Berlin was second largest base of easyjet after London Gatwick.
The German market is becoming increasingly important for British company: according to Haagensen, every fifth easyjet passenger in Germany starts or lands 2018.
