Philipp Jenninger is dead. As German Bundestag has reported, former Bundestag president died last Thursday at age of 85 years.

Jenninger was born 1932 in Baden-Württemberg Rindelbach. The lawyer, who studied law, sat for CDU from 1969 in German Bundestag. In his political career, Jenninger was among or things first parliamentary managing director of CDU/CSU Group and later Minister of State in Federal Chancellery under Helmut Kohl.
Resignation after “painful misunderstanding”
1984 n he was elected President of Bundestag. He resigned four years later after holding a commemorative speech on 50 anniversary of Jewish pogroms of November 1938. The speech contained misleading quotes from Nazi period, so members of SPD, FDP and Greens left chamber in protest during speech. There was also an international outcry. The criticism was mainly directed against passages in which Jenninger emphasized political successes of Hitler in his first years of office and Hourglass in question form Antisemetische reservations.
The politician no longer ran for Bundestag election 1990. He was a German ambassador to Austria from 1991 to 1995 and n to 1997 ambassador to Vatican.

“Philipp Jenninger has decisively influenced German politics for many years in prominent positions,” said current Bundestag president Wolfgang Schäuble. He had experienced Jenninger as a passionate MEP and was very much appreciated as a convinced Democrat. The fact that he had drawn political conclusions after a “painful misunderstanding” for 1988 showed his great sense of responsibility, said Schäuble.
