The United Nations refugee Organization UNHCR has brought 162 people from a refugee camp in Libya to Italy. The refugees were able to enter via a so-called humanitarian corridor on Friday evening by plane.

According to Italian media, refugee’s work has selected particularly vulnerable people, especially small children, but also sick and seniors. Originally, migrants come from Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia. Aid organizations had described conditions in Libyan refugee camps as inhumane.
The immigration of migrants via humanitarian corridor had been organised by Italian Ministry of Interior toger with National Bishops ‘ conference. It is planned to bring thousands of refugees from Libya to Italy in this way. Italy’s interior minister Marco Minniti spoke of a “historic moment”: for first time a humanitarian corridor had been opened to bring people with recognised refugee status out of illegality. The chairman of Italian Bishops ‘ conference, Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, also stressed that humanitarian corridors are a way to legally save many innocent people.
The idea of a humanitarian corridor includes, in addition to a safe and legal entry, a longer-term escort of refugees. The aim is to facilitate integration. In January, Italy’s bishops and government in Rome agreed on an agreement to be laid down for two years. The reception of refugees is refore to be financed from church-based funds. The accommodation is organized by parishes, families, religious institutions and charities.

Pope Francis is also said to have acknowledged commitment to refugees: humanitarian corridors are “a model not only for Italy but for whole of Europe”.
UNHCR estimates that around 18,000 people are currently detained in camps in Libya. In coming year, refugee’s work plans to get up to 10,000 of refugees from camps. According to a report by Reuters news agency, number of migrants who come to Italy on ir own has decreased by two thirds compared to same period last year.
