The growing cultural diversity does not seem to endanger communal intertwining in Germany. This is result of a representative study by Bertelsmann Stiftung. 68 percent of respondents had judged social cohesion of ir own region as “good” during survey. Only seven percent felt he was bad. A different picture arises when it is not about cohesion in our own region, but in Germany as a whole. Three out of four respondents believe that cohesion in whole country is partly at risk. One in four respondents sees no danger.

There are significant differences between East and west and between structurally weak and prosperous regions. According to study, respondents in East German federal States perceive cohesion as weaker than respondents in west. Where prosperity is less, unemployment rates are higher and risk of poverty is greater, respondents have assessed cohesion as weaker. In particular, high levels of youth unemployment have a negative impact on community sentiment, according to study. This is similar to a high proportion of school leavers without a degree and an ageing population.
Share of migrants does not matter
In contrast, according to study, cohesion is higher, where average level of prosperity is high and where more people have a positive attitude towards globalisation. How many foreigners and migrants live in a region do not play a role in cohesion. The highest Zusammenhaltswerte have Saarland, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.
“In order to strengn cohesion, it is important to reduce social inequality and to prevent poverty, and in particular to furr improve economic situation in new federal states,” says Bertelsmann expert Kai Unziger. In particular, at local level, measures should be taken so that everyone can participate in social life and establish contacts between different population groups. The promotion of volunteering and development of a civil society infrastructure are also important building blocks.
