Habeck has long been considered a possible candidate for green Presidency. The 48-year-old could be succeeded by party leader Cem Özdemir, who is no longer in election. Özdemir himself had Habeck as a potential successor at end of November.
“The decision was extremely difficult for me because I had to weigh many things against each or,” said Habeck. “Now for me moment has come to say: I would like to become federal chairman of my party.” For Greens, he sees potential as a corrective in society.
