    The numbers are jumping on his digital clock. It pushes light switch, but lamp stays on. At least now he knows: this is not real. The movie Waking Life from year 2001 plays completely in dream of protagonist. When man without a name realizes that he is dreaming, he begins to control his dream: And suddenly he can fly!

    It’s not science fiction. More than one in two has already consciously experienced how he dreams: Lucid dreams or clear dreams tell sleep researchers about this. Only one in five people have it regularly (consciousness and Cognition: Saunders et al., 2016). A few even succeed in influencing action of ir dream.

    Many myths are about what is possible in this state: become more creative, practise sports or defeat nightmares? Some of se scientists have investigated and found out that real life can in some cases actually be optimised by lucid dreams. But technology has limits and risks.

    Better snowboarding thanks to dream training?

    Clearly dreams have fascinated people for a long time. The ancient Greeks already occupied mselves with it. However, modern empirical research only developed slowly. The dream researcher Léon D ‘ Hervey de Saint-Denys published a book on Lucid dreaming in 19th century. It was followed by essays and works by or scientists and philosophers. But only psychologist Stephen LaBerge performed experimental proof in sleep laboratory in 1970s, where among or things eye movements of dreamers were measured. In Germany, late psychologist Paul Tholey was first scientific to deal with topic. He coined term lucid dreaming.

    if ( typeof AdController !== ‘undefined’ !window.Zeit.isMobileView()) { if ( !document.getElementById( ‘iqadtile4’ ) ) { var elem = document.createElement( ‘div’ ); elem.id = ‘iqadtile4’; elem.className = “ad ad-desktop ad-desktop–4 ad-desktop–4-on-article”; elem.setAttribute(‘data-banner-type’, ‘desktop’); elem.setAttribute(‘data-banner-label’, ‘Anzeige’); document.getElementById(‘ad-desktop-4’).parentNode.appendChild(elem); AdController.render(‘iqadtile4’); if ( window.console typeof window.console.info === ‘function’ ) { window.console.info(‘AdController ‘ AdController.VERSION ‘ tile 4 desktop’) } } } if ( typeof AdController !== ‘undefined’ window.Zeit.isMobileView()) { if ( !document.getElementById( ‘iqadtile4’ ) ) { var elem = document.createElement( ‘div’ ); elem.id = ‘iqadtile4’; elem.className = “ad ad-mobile ad-mobile–4 ad-mobile–4-on-article”; elem.setAttribute(‘data-banner-type’, ‘mobile’); document.getElementById(‘ad-mobile-4’).parentNode.appendChild(elem); AdController.render(‘iqadtile4’); if ( window.console typeof window.console.info === ‘function’ ) { window.console.info(‘AdController ‘ AdController.VERSION ‘ tile 4 mobile’) } } }

    Tholey, who was also a sports scientist, addressed, among or things, question of wher exercising in lucid improves skills in waking state. He himself is supposed to have practised motion sequences from snowboarding or skateboarding in a dream again and again. He assured him that he had helped him.

    Lucid Dreams info REM-Sleep

    In sleep re are always times when eyes quickly move back and forth, hence name Rapid eye movement, short rem. These sleep phases take about a quarter of bedtime. All skeletal muscles are so relaxed that y are almost paralyzed, at least in healthy ones. Exception: eye muscles.

    The electrical brain activity in REM sleep is similar to falling asleep. Subjectively, we usually experience dreams. In general, sleep is organized in 90-minute cycles , each cycle ending with a rem phase. It will be longer with each cycle.

    But can such perceived training successes also be measured? So far, re are only a few examples of small motor tasks. One of se was provided by sleep and sports scientist Daniel Erlacher from University of Bern.

    Daniel Jack

    is a sports scientist at University of Bern. He explores motor skills in dreams, but also regeneration through sleep or sleep before sporting competitions. He is editor of International Journal of Dream Research.

    2015 he and his colleague Tadas Stumbrys participants of a study to train a certain sequence of keys on a keyboard in a Dream (Journal of Sports Sciences: Stumbrys et al., 2015). They divided ir subjects into four groups: one trained task in waking state physically, second only in thought, third group practiced in lucid. The control group did not deepen task.

    The result: those who practised sequence of hints in a dream could improve as much as those who had trained in waking state. However, sample was only small: 68 people. In this field of research, it is naturally difficult to find more subjects.
