A total of 133,080 people experienced violence in past year by partner or ex-partner and indicated it to police. Almost 82 percent of victims of attempted and consummate crimes, such as murder and manslaughter, bodily injury, rape, sexual coercion, threat and stalking, were women, as Federal Office of United States. The number of victims of partnership violence has thus risen by 4.4 percent compared to previous year – a trend that has continued since 2012.

Half of women lived in a common household with perpetrator. Among offences that were recorded in police were 69,700 intentional simple bodily injuries, 16,700 threats, 11,900 dangerous bodily injuries, around 7,600 stalking cases and 357 cases of murder and manslaughter.
Federal Family Minister Katarina Barley (SPD) expressed his shock at statistics: “The figures are frightening – especially with regard to suspected obscurity.” Protection against violence should be given highest priority. Existing aid structures such as women’s housing and advisory services would need to be strengned.
Signs that more victims were seeking help from police
However, increasing numbers of crimes that became known also made barley a sign that more victims were seeking help from police and were showing violent crimes. In addition, sexual criminal law was changed last year and protection of stalking victims was improved – which could also have led to more ads.

At international level, too, UN Women’s organisation hopes that many more women will go public with ir accusations. The recent cases of sexual harassment, including in Hollywood and US media industry, are just beginning. “We are probably not yet at point where enough people share strong conviction that this is profoundly traumatizing and causes a pain in many women that never ends,” said boss of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Even women who are not actresses in Hollywood would have to make ir fate public, so that perpetrators would have to bear consequences, said Mlambo-Ngcuka.
Sexual harassment is a priority topic of a 16-day action that begins on Saturday, International Day against Violence against women. There is no global statistics on sexual harassment. UN Women, however, calls for EU figures that 45 to 55 percent of women in European Union have been sexually harassed for 15 years.
