The 2-year-old who went missing from his parents’ home Saturday is now in protective custody out of concern for the boy’s “welfare and safety at home,” according to Portland police.

Authorities launched a major search for River Schomaker after his mother reported the boy missing at about 6 a.m. Saturday. He was discovered in blackberry bushes about two blocks from his home, in the Madison South neighborhood, by a K9 team just before noon.

The boy was treated at a local hospital for injuries and exposure to cold weather. He’s now in protective care, according to police, and a court hearing is scheduled Tuesday. Oregon’s Department of Human Services is involved.

The boy’s father, Aaron Schomaker, told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Saturday that he believes the toddler was able to open a ground-floor door.
