An Amtrak police officer has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting while he was on duty near Union Station last week, authorities said.

LaRoyce Tankson, 31, was charged after he surrendered to law enforcement authorities late Thursday, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

He is accused of fatally shooting Chad Robertson, 25, of Minneapolis in the 300 block of South Canal Street around 8:45 p.m. on Feb. 8.  Robertson was taking a bus from Memphis, Tenn., to Minneapolis and was on a stopover in Chicago, police said.

According to family members, Tankson fired at Robertson as he ran during an encounter near Union Station. The officer fired twice, striking Robertson once in the back, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Robertson was found with cash and narcotics, but was unarmed.

Robertson’s family was filed a wrongful death lawsuit in federal court in Chicago.

One person was wounded in a shooting by an Amtrak police officer in Chicago near Union Station on Feb. 8, 2017, authorities said. The man later died on Feb. 16, 2017.
