HILLSBOROUGH — A surprise drug sweep was conducted at Hillsborough High School Friday morning and law enforcement authorities found no illegal substances, township police said in a news release Friday afternoon.

Drug-detection canines were used during the sweep that began at 7:45 a.m., police said.
Prior to the sweep, all students and faculty were made aware of the operation, and there was minimal disruption to the learning environment, according to police. The sweep included student vehicles parked on campus, police stated.
Drug-sniffing canine teams sniffed the exterior of lockers throughout the building. In addition, some classrooms were randomly selected for additional checks, according to police. Students were removed from the classrooms and instructed to leave bags and backpacks behind.
The operation was completed in about 90 minutes, and was conducted in accordance with the New Jersey School Search Police Manual, police said.
The following law enforcement agencies assisted in this operation: Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office; Somerset County Sheriff’s Office; New Jersey State Police; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Bound Brook Police Department; Passaic County Sheriff’s Office and Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Hazlet Police Department.
