BAYONNE — Bayonne’s unemployment rate is at the lowest it’s been in at least 10 years, according to the latest figures released by the Bureau of Labor statistics.

The rate dropped half a point from the start of the year, from 4.9 percent in January to 4.4 percent in December.

“Our administration has made a consistent commitment to economic development,” said Mayor Jimmy Davis. “As a result of our pro-growth policies, construction workers have been back on the job, building new residential and commercial structures in Bayonne. We have also seen jobs grow in the health care, retail, and financial trades.”

Bayonne saw its highest unemployment rate September of 2009 — 12.2 percent — in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.

The city saw a consistent decrease from there, dropping below 10 percent in October 2012 and steadily declining from there.

“We’re still striving to put more people back to work,” Davis added. “We look forward to seeing the unemployment rate drop further.”

The state unemployment rate was 4.1 in December, lower than the national rate of 4.7 percent in December. Hudson County’s came in at 3.8 percent.
