With its digital and systematic analysis of process risks, DEKRA aims to improve safety in process industries while reducing resource needs. Its Digital Process Hazard Analysis (DPHA) combines the advantages of computer technology with the specialized knowledge of DEKRA experts on reliable and safe processes, optimizing the deployment of personnel and allowing faster results, while improving safety.
Process hazard analysis methods (HAZOP, LOPA, etc.) have hardly changed in the last decades. Now DEKRA has introduced a new digital PHA, harnessing the digital possibilities offered by computer simulations and artificial intelligence (AI). Thanks to process modeling to simulate scenarios and a proprietary AI solution, DEKRA experts can collaborate with plant operators to carry out optimized PHAs. Time savings amount to approximately 70%, while get more accurate and consistent results. In this way, brainstorming sessions – the most resource-intensive phase of the PHA process – can be shortened considerably. The analysis is divided into the following steps: • Preparation: DEKRA experts work with the operator to gather the necessary information and determine the relevant scenarios. • Simulation: Thanks to process modeling and computational support, a Mobatec computer simulation Modeller calculates causes, consequences, and safeguards, operating much faster and more accurately than human brainstorming. • Review of results: Once the computer generates its suggestions, humans can review the results, make recommendations, and consider additional safeguards or focus on problem resolution. These three steps are repeated for all scenarios identified for analysis. The digital PHA concludes with a written report detailing the results.
