Dear John: Regarding excess charges at Florida rental car companies, I ran into very much the same problem with Thrifty. I rented an economy car for six days, which was supposed to cost $289. The bill I received was for $560.
There can be as many as 10 extra surcharges on the bill.
None of these were explained to me, except the cost of the Sunpass toll payment transponder, which I agreed to as I knew I would be traveling a section of I-95 that charged tolls.
I disputed the $560 charge through my credit card company and agreed to pay $334, which would include the charge for the Sunpass. Thrifty has until the billing cycle in March to counter my claim.
Can’t the Florida attorney general’s office look into this, and make all rental car companies explicitly state all charges before a car is rented? M.B.
Dear M.B.: Maybe after these articles, people will look more closely at their bills and authorities more closely at car rentals.
Can a car-sharing business along the lines of Airbnb be far off if the abuses continue?
