Florida Hospital Winter Garden broke ground on a 72,000-square-foot medical office building next to its year-old hospital.

“In addition to the high demand for emergency care, we have also seen great demand for primary and specialty health care services,” said Amanda Maggard, campus CEO, in a news release. “This building will allow us to further gather physicians of various specialties in one central location and offer even more outpatient services right here in West Orange.”

Florida Hospital is planning a $10 million renovation for the ninth and 10th floor of its old patient tower, turning them into orthopedic floors. Those floors housed bone-marrow transplantation and surgery, but some of the services and personnel have been moved to the new Florida Hospital for Women.

HCA is bringing its urgent care chain, CareNow Urgent Care, to Orlando by opening its first clinic in Winter Springs. The national hospital chain is planning to open more clinics this year and next.

UCF College of Medicine and Osceola Regional Medical Center have received initial accreditation for a neurology residency program and are accepting applicants. The program is approved for 16 trainees.

Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies received a $100,000 donation from the Wawa Foundation for its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to purchase new incubators to transport high-risk babies to and from the hospital.

Orange County EMS gave the Eatonville Police Department 12 automated external defibrillators in January through a grant from the Florida Department of Health EMS Trust Fund.

The nonprofit Healing the Children provided care for 33 kids in Central Florida with nearly $75,000 worth of donated specialty work in 2016. 

Kids Beating Cancer gave a $200,000 check to Florida Hospital Foundation to support Florida Hospital for Children’s pediatric transplant program.

The Birth Place is expanding its services in West Orange County, offering pregnant women hospital delivery at South Lake Hospital. Women can also have natural delivery and water birth at The Birth Place.

Oviedo Medical Research and Digestive and Liver Center of Central Florida are participating in and recruiting candidates for a clinical trial that’s testing a vibrating pill for chronic constipation.  Device maker Vibrant is conducting the study for FDA clearance. The capsule is not a pharmaceutical. 

Humana has laid off 328 employees from its Humana At Home division, the company’s home-based chronic-care program. Most of the layoffs took place in the Tampa Bay area. Fewer than five were affected in Orlando. The Humana at Home program will continue to operate. 

Dr. David Baker-Hargrove, co-CEO of Two Spirit Health Services has received the 2017 Family Equality Council’s Hostetter-Habib Family Award for contributions to Orlando’s LGBTQ community.

The Integrated Independent Physicians Network (IPN) has elected Dr. Mark Chaet as new president and Dr. Jason Pirozzolo as vice president.
