BANGKOK, Oct. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The 2022 Ultra-Broadband Forum raised the curtain today in Bangkok, with David Wang, CEO of the Board of Directors of Huawei and Chairman of the Board of Directors of ICT Infrastructure, delivering a speech keynote speech entitled Stride to Ultra-Broadband 5.5G. During this speech, Wang outlined the huge changes that will take place in areas such as smart homes, smart campuses, and the industrial Internet by 2030. He also made it clear that 5.5G ultra-wideband will be a key milestone on the way to a smarter world. recommended that the industry take four key steps to speed up this process. He then called on all players in the industry to work together to move faster towards 5.5G ultra-broadband.
As we approach the intelligent world of 2030, broadband speeds in homes will reach 10 Gbit/s, which is a huge improvement over the current 1 Gbit/s experience. Currently, households have an average of 5 to 20 devices connected to their Wi-Fi networks. However, this is set to change as smart home devices become more widely adopted, pushing this number up to 150 or 200. So it will be essential that fiber can reach every room in every room. home.
By 2030, Wi-Fi networks will also be capable of delivering various 10 Gbit/s experiences for medium and large campuses, and will need to support intelligent operations and management. Micro and small businesses will need Wi-Fi networks that can deliver high bandwidth, premium experiences, and single-use intranet services. The industrial Internet will require bandwidth greater than 10 Gbit/s and latency less than a millisecond. Enterprises will adopt a multi-cloud strategy that requires networks to dynamically adjust routing. Driven by green development and automation, we will see a 10x increase in grid capacity, energy efficiency and O efficiency.
“5.5G ultra-wideband will be a key milestone on our way to this intelligent world. To reach this milestone, all industry players, including standards organizations, regulators, operators and equipment vendors, will need to work together.” I would like to call on everyone to continue to work together Let’s harness 5.5G ultra-broadband technologies, build 5.5G networks and develop a 5.5G ecosystem Together, we will advance our industry and move towards ultra-broadband 5.5G,” Wang explained.
The four steps that, according to Wang, the industry must take to achieve 5.5G ultra-broadband are:
First, define the next generation standards and reach an industry-wide consensus.
ETSI began to lead the standardization of F5G Advanced with its Release 3 standard. And the ETSI White Paper: Fixed 5th Generation Advanced and Beyond, designed specifically for the optical industry, was published in September 2022. Looking ahead to 2025, ETSI Smart home use cases and fiber optic sensing will be addressed by the standards.
In the IP sector, Huawei also published a white paper on Net5.5G during this forum. They believe that Net5.5G will achieve even higher bandwidth and perform flexible, end-to-end SRv6 optimization by 2023. By 2025, IP networks are expected to realize computing power and applications, allowing them to deliver more deterministic network experiences and service assurance for more industry scenarios.
Second, jointly promote the rapid adoption of standards throughout the product life cycle, from technological advances to product development, deployment, and operations.
In optical access, GPON, 10G PON and 50G PON Combo will be compatible with operators’ existing ODN networks and support their seamless and continuous upgrade. C-WAN architecture can be introduced into FTTR networks, supporting stable Gbit/s experiences in all homes and reducing roaming handover times to less than 20 milliseconds.
In optical transmission, the spectrum available for 400G WDM networks will increase from 8 THz to 12 THz. This will increase the number of available wavelengths by 50% and provide single fiber transmission capacity of up to 100T. In the case of metropolitan WDM, new wavelength pooling WDM technology will be able to facilitate flexible sharing of metropolitan wavelengths across multiple rings, greatly reducing total cost of ownership and facilitating deployment of WDM at access sites.
In terms of IP, Wi-Fi 7 will use technologies such as CO-SR and CO-OFDMA to improve collaboration between different access points and thus improve the experience across the network. This will require the support of technologies such as UL OFDMA and UL MU-MIMO, to improve the reliability of the Wi-Fi connection. APN6 and SRv6 can also provide valuable support in this regard, detecting computing power and application requirements and dynamically configuring cloud resources so businesses can connect to clouds faster. In addition, deterministic IP technologies can be used to reduce traffic microbursts and end-to-end jitter in IP networks to less than 20 microseconds.
Third, the deployment of 5.5G ultra-wideband faster using policies and target networks.
New standards and technologies can only create value when applied to real networks. Therefore, governments and regulators will need to adopt more effective policies, including national broadband strategies, fiber deployment policies, and construction regulations, to accelerate the deployment of gigabit FTTH networks and help bring the fiber to every room in every home.
Operators also have an important role to play. They will have to define target network architectures for 2025 and 2030. They must also accelerate the deployment of FTTH and FTTR networks, the deployment of metropolitan WDM to access sites, the upgrade of IP networks to SRv6 networks, and the deployment 400G and 800G for both broadcast and IP networks.
Fourth, explore new applications and build a thriving ecosystem.
Industry players and ecosystem partners need to work together to explore what 5.5G ultra-broadband will look like. 5.5G ultra-wideband will be able to support new high-potential applications, and once 10 Gbit/s becomes a reality everywhere, applications such as MetaVerse gaming and real-time interactions will see wider adoption. In addition, new campus scenarios, such as immersive offices and robot-assisted offices, and services for micro and small businesses, such as Wi-Fi one-stop-shop networks, will continue to be explored. Huawei believes that the telecom industry will have to cooperate with Industrial Internet companies as they continue to work on deterministic experience and flexible routing in support of the Industrial Internet. This will help incubate applications for automated industrial control and enterprise connectivity to multiple clouds.
This ongoing standardization continues to drive change in the ultra-broadband industry. In the last 10 years, the world has seen 790 million new FTTH users, while in the last five years, 100 million users have started using gigabit services. In the last year, a million more users have started using FTTR services.
There are also some 50,000 high-quality OTN private lines used by businesses, 600,000 cloud private lines, and more than 27 million Wi-Fi 6 hotspots available worldwide. This is in addition to the 130+ 400G WDM networks, more than 15,000 all-optical cross-connect ROADMs and more than 100 SRv6-compliant IP networks that have already been deployed around the world.
