The current crisis in the real estate sector and energy efficiency policies from Europe, with the threat of climate change as a backdrop, make wood the ideal construction material. The Professional Conference on Conservation and Treatment of Wood EXPOCIDA MADERA 2023, organized by ANECPLA, has addressed in Bilbao the fundamental role of this key material for sustainable construction and the most innovative methods to ensure its conservation
Bilbao, March 16, 2023.- How many times the solution to problems is so close that it cannot be seen. Wood is one of the noble materials par excellence in construction. Used by humans since the earliest civilizations, it ceased to be used with the advent of modern concrete and new steel production techniques. However, the innovation and development of the sector in recent years, together with the climatic demands and the multiple benefits that wood has at an environmental level, have once again placed this material, used since time immemorial, at the center of the future of construction throughout the world. This has been made clear in the third edition of the Professional Congress of Conservation and Treatment of Wood, EXPOCIDA MADERA 2023, organized by the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (ANECPLA), which took place on the days March 9 and 10 in Bilbao. An event that has once again brought together some of the most relevant national and international professionals and experts from the architecture, rehabilitation, construction, restoration and pest management sectors from all over Spain around wood as a material of construction of the future. And it is that, if one takes into account that the construction sector is responsible for about 30% of CO2 emissions from human actions, it is evident that the taking of measures by this sector seems urgent. “Wood is the only construction material whose use not only does not contaminate, but also helps to reduce CO2 from the atmosphere, thus contributing to mitigating the impact of climate change. This makes wood the construction alternative with the footprint of during his speech at the Congress, Manuel Touza, doctor of forestry engineering from the Center for Innovation and Technological Services for Wood in Galicia (XERA – CIS Madera) explained it. An argument that, although it is undoubtedly one of the most powerful in the current situation, it is by no means the only one that reinforces the commitment to wood as the ideal construction material. And so the architect with more than 25 years of professional career, specialized in rehabilitation of Historical Heritage, Fernando Espinosa de los Monteros, has also resulted in this during his presentation. “Wood is a wonderful material: natural, sustainable, economical, profoundly beautiful, safe, easy to work with, extremely versatile, warm… Its advantages are innumerable and durability must be added to all of them. Through my profession, I have had the opportunity to restore a good number of elements of Historical Heritage made with wood that, with good maintenance, have the capacity to be highly durable.” “And for the proper maintenance of wood, the work of pest management professionals and Environmental Health”, pointed out Jorge Galván, forestry engineer and general director of the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (ANECPLA). “Because they are the only ones with the training and knowledge necessary to carry out, in the first place, an accurate analysis of the situation that accurately locates the origin of the problem and then applies the appropriate and most appropriate treatments.” Issuer: ANECPLA
