– Christina Lamb, Award-Winning Journalist and Bestselling Author, Named Education Cannot Wait Global Champion

Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent for The Sunday Times and co-author of I Am Malala, will advocate for crisis-affected children’s right to education with the UN Global Fund for Education in Emergencies

NEW YORK, June 15, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — Education Cannot Wait (ECW), The United Nations Global Fund for Education in Emergencies has named Christina Lamb an “ECW World Champion.”

The Sunday Times chief foreign affairs correspondent and co-author of the best-selling I Am Malala will help promote advocacy for European Women’s Week around the world, draw on her extensive networks to support resource mobilization efforts and work with global strategic partners to increase visibility of the pressing challenges facing the more than 222 million crisis-affected girls and boys around the world who urgently need quality education.

As one of the world’s leading journalists, Lamb has covered everything from the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria to repression and human rights violations in Eritrea and Zimbabwe. She is the author of ten books, including I Am Malala, The Girl from Aleppo, and Our Bodies, Their Battlefield.

“Christina is a global force for good in the world. Her passionate and honest stories about the real-life trials and tribulations faced by girls like Malala and Nujeen Mustafa are an inspiration to all of us. As a global advocate for ECW , Christina will continue to advocate for increased resources to support the right to education for children affected by crises around the world,” said Yasmine Sherif, Executive Director of Education Cannot Wait.

“This appointment means everything to me. As a journalist covering conflicts and crises around the world for more than three decades – and as a mother – the toll of children is always the most heartbreaking. Time and time again I have seen children forced to flee their homes, live in crowded camps or underground shelters, or watch their loved ones die in front of them, while displaying remarkable resilience,” Lamb said.

Lamb joins top world leaders, including UN Secretary General António Guterres, in supporting ECW’s 222 Million Dreams Campaign, which began last year and aims to mobilize at least $1.5 billion to meet ECW’s four-year strategic plan.

“I am clear that there is nothing that makes more of a difference than education, and we must do everything possible for the more than 222 million girls and boys affected by the crisis who are staying out of school in the most difficult contexts in the world” Lamb declared.
