GRANADA, Nicaragua, February 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — In the long-awaited Global Final of the 3rd edition of Flor de Caña’s Sustainable Cocktail Challenge, Julie Nguyen of Opium Bar in Thailand was crowned Global Champion after competing with 32 of the best mixologists in the world to create the most spectacular sustainable cocktails.
The Global Final took place on February 3 in the incredible and exotic natural setting offered by the tropical volcanic islands of Granada in Nicaragua.
The jury was made up of distinguished personalities such as: Danil Nevsky, bartender named the third most influential person in the industry; Alex Francis, renowned bartender and bar consultant; and Mandy Naglich, prominent food and beverage journalist. They evaluated elements such as: the story and inspiration behind the cocktail, the use of sustainable ingredients, the technique and level of creativity, as well as the taste and appearance.
Julie took first place after impressing the judges with her passion and innovation in creating sustainable cocktails. The winning cocktail, called “From Sip to Seed”, was made using corn (each part: husk, silk, cob and kernels) and local natural elements such as palm sugar and coconut milk to highlight the main ingredient, Flor de Rum. 12 Years Cane.
In addition to receiving the title of “Global Champion of Sustainable Cocktails by Flor de Caña”, Julie received the Global Champion trophy made with sustainable materials, a personalized bottle of Flor de Caña 25 Years Rum and a US$10,000 prize. Julie will also receive a free sustainability course and assessment given by Food Made Good, the competition’s advisor.

Andrea Marseglia from Bar Teresa Cocktail in New Zealand took second place in the competition and Lacey-Jane Roberts from Bar Published on Main in Canada took third place, receiving cash prizes and personalized bottles of Flor de Caña.
More than 30 countries were represented in the Sustainable Cocktail Challenge, which is a celebration of Flor de Caña’s historic commitment to sustainability, and a way to share and promote these values with the global bartending community. In addition to being the first rum in the world certified Carbon Neutral and Fair Trade, it is distilled using 100% renewable energy and all CO2 emissions generated during fermentation are captured and recycled. The brand has also planted one million trees since 2005.
